State and local road projects the focus of next Decatur City Council meeting

The Decatur City Council will be voting on agreements to improve roads throughout the city including U.S. 51 and local streets at its next meeting on Monday, March 1 at 5:30 PM.

Later this year, the Illinois Department of Transportation will embark on a significant road improvement project of U.S. 51 between Interstate 72 south to Pershing Rd. The project will include overlaying the road with new asphalt, and sidewalk and pedestrian signal improvements.  Planning for significant road improvements to U.S. 51 between Pershing Rd. and Eldorado St. also continue and hopefully will be completed soon.

The city council will likely approve a contract to rehabilitate 2.74 miles of the city’s 825 total lane miles (0.3%).  The local roads city staff determined were most in need of improvement include parts of S. Nelson Blvd., N. 33rd St., E. Eldorado St., E. Prairie St., N. Country Trail, E. Marietta St., and E. Orchard St.  The street improvement projects will cost $1.12 million with funding coming primarily from the local motor fuel tax.
